This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Will you help me create an environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all students in my classroom? I want my students to feel proud of their cultures, as well as, accepting of other's from different cultural backgrounds.
I teach Kindergarten at a high poverty school. Currently, there are 17 students in my class from diverse cultural backgrounds. Because of the high mobility rate at my school, my enrollment changes frequently. I believe acceptance and tolerance are important skills that must be taught to children at an early age.
Fortunately, the students in my classroom are generally kind, and eager to learn about one another's culture. Unfortunately, my classroom is lacking the appropriate tools for students to use to share their cultures. The items found in our dramatic play center, block center, and music center offer little diversity. They don't allow children to play with dolls/block people that look like themselves, or to listen/dance to songs that sing their native language.
Can you imagine the excitement my little 5 and 6 year olds would feel walking into a classroom that truly reflects their cultural identities? My students would love to be able to pretend in dramatic play with realistic dolls that resemble themselves, or to build a community out of blocks complete with block people that look similar to the people in their own neighborhoods. Listening to stories from various cultures, singing and dancing to different languages as well as native languages and completing a puzzle that includes children from around the world are all important for developing global compassion and awareness. All of these experiences will be possible if this project gets funded. Each supply requested was specifically chosen to match the needs and interests of the students in my classroom.
Your kind generosity and support will not only help develop academic achievement, but will also provide my students with the tools they need to be successful and happy.
