Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a high-need community. Our school recently opened to provide over-crowding relief for a neighboring high school. These students were forced to switch to a new school with all of its growing pains (and believe me, there are growing pains).
I have 80 students this year who are deeply engaged in their educations. These 80 students have elected to take AP Literature, a course that doubles their load of English classes for the year, because they believe that this opportunity is the best way to prepare for college. In spite of social pressure to underachieve as well as a lack of a college-going culture, these students are all preparing and applying to schools.
Since we are a new school, we do not yet have access to as many core literature titles as necessary to help students do well on something like the AP exam, which requires a broad knowledge of literature.
This year, we are approaching our preparation for the AP exam by reading a wide array of novels spanning the traditional canon, as well as more modern choices. For this unit, in which we are reading about dystopias, we will be reading The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
I hope to challenge my students' notions about society; I also think that a well-intentioned idea gone bad is something to which my students relate. Most importantly, this book is one that students will use to prepare for May's AP test.
While we will primarily use these books in the AP Lit class, they will be available to other teachers in other classes as well.
You can make it possible for my students to have a chance at achieving their dreams of being college-ready. With a donation to this project, you will be bringing books to students who are eager to tackle college-level material, which will ultimately allow them a chance to be competitive for college admissions.
My AP Literature students need 29 copies of The Handmaid's Tale.
