This book list consists of fiction and non-fiction grade appropriate picture books to support good writing curriculum using authentic stories as models and inspiration. This is my second year in a second grade classroom at a low-income school. Our school district adopted curriculum this year to support writing workshop with our students. These texts are recommended for second grade to enrich and support that curriculum. Unfortunately, my classroom has been left to acquiring these texts through my own resourcefulness. I had planned on using my local public library, but that is quite a challenge. With many teachers vying for the same books, it has been difficult to time the one copy available when needed.
Many of my students are reading below grade level and do not come from literature rich home environments. These books are just another way to continue their exposure to creative stories, rich language, and reading inspiration. In addition to supporting writer’s workshop, these books can be added to our classroom library to be revisited during silent reading times. These books will be used to increase vocabulary, increase fluency, and teach life skills through discussions in our classroom. We will also be able to use them to study the craft of writing in writer's workshop.
Sample titles include: Dogzilla, Koko’s Kitten, How to be a Friend, Dogs Don’t Wear Sneakers, My Little Sister Ate One Hare, and Night in the Country.
