Graphic Novels, Comic Books, and Creativity

My students need 30 high-interest graphic novels, ranging from Usagi Yojimbo and Ultimate Iron-Man, to Bone and Artemus Fowl.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Kiesel's classroom raised $565

This project is fully funded

I teach fifth grade in an urban school where 99% of the students receive free or reduced price lunches. We have a high transient population and this year 50% of our new transfer students are homeless. I'm in charge of thirty students and we're in serious need of resources. Few of my students read at home or come from homes where reading is encouraged or fostered. To put it simply, my students are far behind on their reading levels. On average my class is two years behind level. The difficulty is partially their level, but also the growing frustration that the kids feel when they consistently struggle with their material. I've been working with them over the past two months to encourage them and to urge them into tackling whatever reading they are able to. We work as best we can on reading comprehension skills and active reading strategies, but we're always faced with a shortage of books they find interesting which are also level appropriate. The only way for them to really increase their reading levels is for them to read more. They need to take the skills that we learn in class and apply them to the books that they are reading on their own and that interest them. I’ve found that one of the best motivators for my students, especially the young boys in my class, is providing them with fun, quality graphic novels and comic books to read. These books are engaging and still contain wonderful lessons in dialogue, character, plot, theme, and setting. All of the skills we work on in class can be bolstered using graphic novels. These books are familiar to the kids and not intimidating like many of the other young adult novels I’ve gotten for the class. My students need access to engaging and interesting books that they can read and understand. This is where you can help. With your donation, we’ll be able to stock our classroom library with a rich assortment of illustrated books and graphic novels. With this resource, you’ll be providing my classroom with highly interesting, highly engaging books. These will not only reinforce the skills we’re learning in class, but also act as wonderful inspiration of our own creative projects. For much of my class this will be the donation that not only gives them materials to read, but also exposes them to reading that is fun. It is this type of reading, the fun, adventurous, and exciting reading, which starts kids on the path toward becoming book lovers and lifetime readers.
