What child does not love the thrill of discovery? What child doesn't look forward to getting their hands dirty in the middle of a science experiment?
I can tell you that my eager class of 20 six-year-olds LOVE to jump in and explore topics in Science. I teach in an economically disadvantaged town in Texas. My students do not have many opportunities for hands on exploration in their home life. It is my job to provide those wonderful opportunities for them.
My school district has adopted a wonderful new curriculum. This curriculum is designed to be much more constructivist than in the past. Gone are the days of drill and practice worksheets and "color the picture" sheets. Now our curriculum wants us donning safety glasses and gloves and diving into our experiments.
There is a problem though. While our curriculum asks us to be more hands on in our approach, it does not provide the materials we need to do so.
The primary focus in a K-2 campus is obviously the development of reading and mathematics. This leaves very little money in our budget to devote to science materials.
With your generosity I will be able to purchase six different science tubs to use in my classroom. These tubs include materials to direct experiments, have hands on vocabulary activities, and literature connections. The activities directly tie in to the units required by our curriculum and are re-usable.
By helping me purchase these tubs you will not only be helping my class, but will also be helping the six other first grade classrooms as we can share the materials.
On behalf of my wonderful students, I thank you for taking the time to read this proposal and hopefully aid in the funding.
