Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is my fourth year of teaching, and everything is going great. One problem, though: my classroom library should be 60% nonfiction (or so claims just about every expert ever). Right now, I'd put it around, oh, .023%. There are a few reasons behind this: first, I'm addicted to fiction. There are so many great young-adult novels out there, I tend to buy those. Also, nonfiction books tend to be pretty expensive. This, my dear donor, is where you come in. I've recently had a proposal for 21 nonfiction books funded through Donors Choose. Now I'm requesting 20 more. Bit by bit, I'm going to establish a great nonfiction section to our classroom library. The books in this proposal are about extraordinary people. From a woman who helped rescue people from concentration camps to a girl who survived modern slavery to twelve inner-city teens who managed to thrive, I'm hoping my students will be inspired to do great things. I've chosen books that I know will also appeal to my students' interests. These books are also sure to help their reading and critical thinking skills. Constant testing and the other mandates of No Child Left Behind are hurdles my students and I must jump every year. My kids are at a huge disadvantage--they're not native speakers, our school lacks resources, and many have very little support at home. Reading nonfiction for pleasure will give them the critical thinking skills they'll need to succeed on these tests and in school in general--even when odds are against them. Please help!
