I teach an eighth grade English Language Arts class in a high-needs school, with more than seventy-five percent of the students living in poverty. My students come from backgrounds from all over the world. One of the lessons that I try to implement every single day is tolerance and the acceptance of the many different languages and cultures that are present in my classroom, as well as the mutual respect that every student should be treated with, regardless of gender, race, or religion.
Still, my students face these types of obstacles each and every day. One lesson I try to incorporate into every school day is the importance of education. It is with education that my students will overcome poverty and go on to lead successful and stable lives. Even so, many students find it hard to become engaged in a novel; they are much more interested in television, Internet, and video games. In order to help my students develop a love for reading, I need to supply them with a novel that will keep them engaged.
John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" is a classic piece of literature that is adored by every student who reads it. It describes the time period of the Great Depression in a way that helps students truly understand what it was like to live in America during that time. Furthermore, the relationships between characters of different races and genders help spark discussions that pertain to the personal lives of the students. They see fragments of themselves in the novel and therefore become invested in it.
With your help, it will be possible for my students to develop a love of literature! This will enhance their reading comprehension skills which will, in turn, make them better students with successful futures. We thank you in advance for your generous donation and your commitment to molding these young minds that are the future of our great country.
