My students need 30 binoculars for class field trips to Seton Falls Park to identify birds and other living creatures that live there and to more closely observe the diversity of plants.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. H.'s classroom raised $348

I am a public school science teacher for grades Pre-K to three, including general ed, special ed and hearing impaired students from low socio-economic background. My total register of students reaches about four hundred. My school is adjacent to a largely underused and unappreciated 40 acre urban forest that has just been renovated by Ameri-Corps.
My students often are not permitted outdoor activity due to the perceived dangers of the neighborhood. Students are in public housing where pets are not permitted. Students connection with the natural world is minimal. I have found in my field trips with them they have gained a greater appreciation of the natural world around them.
Hiking through the forest we have begun to identify trees by their leaf shape and noted the type of rocks evident. We have noted how birds especially seem to thrive in our green areas. I have one pair of adult binoculars that I allow the students to use. Students love to look through it. I have found students become much more engaged and focused using the binoculars. They feel like true scientists using scientific tools. I want them to become true observers of the world around them and in doing so become protectors of the natural world.
If my young scientists receive binoculars from donors, I will make sure they know that what they do is so important others want to help. They are the future of our earth and others want to help them make it a safe and beautiful place. With thirty binoculars, a donation is not just touching thirty students but many hundred that I share my field walks with. I hope that observation of the wonder of nature inspires a caring attitude. Perhaps it will evolve into a really green way of life for my little ones.
