From Caterpillar to Butterfly

My kindergarten life cycles unit needs colorful informative books, posters and live caterpillars.

The soft flitter flutter of butterfly wings will surprise and delight the children as we release Painted Lady butterflies into our garden habitat. My Kindergarten English as a Second Language (ESOL) students and their classmates will get to follow the life cycle of the butterfly from caterpillar to adult butterfly. They will be able watch while garden flowers attract the Painted Lady butterflies as they feed and begin a new cycle of life.

Our school is in an urban setting. The ESOL students make up thirty-three percent of the Kindergarten population. Many of the students in our school are on free or reduced lunch fees and their parents do not have the time or money to explore learning opportunities.

Four Kindergarten classes will be able to share the materials I am requesting. By ordering and sharing two sets of development posters, books about animal camouflage, Painted Lady life cycle mounts, student books on the life cycle and coupons for twelve caterpillars per class, all of our Kindergarten students will have the enhanced opportunity to see, touch, explore, read and learn about one of Nature's wonders. The children will be able to watch up close as the caterpillars feed, move and grow larger. They will document the change as each caterpillar crawls to the top of a mesh cage to make a chrysalis. We will count the number of days it takes for the butterflies to emerge. We will measure the ingredients to mix the sweet solution or “nectar” for the butterflies to feed on before we release them into the garden. And we will document with photographs each exciting step along the way to create a memory book for the children to read and remember the experience.

Your help will make it possible for my ESOL students and their classmates to experience, investigate and understand basic needs and life processes of animals. They will learn that living things change as they grow and will be able to use new vocabulary to describe the changes undergone during the life cycle.
