I teach chorus, songwriting and general music at a wonderfully diverse urban high-performing arts-based charter school that serves grades 6-12.

We are a new "post-Katrina" school and many of our students lost their music instruments in Hurricane Katrina. We currently have 10 donated digital pianos that are more than 20 years old. Many have significant technical glitches (like one where none of the G's work), and we have looked into repairing them, but the pianos are so old that the repair parts are not manufactured anymore! We use the pianos to teach music theory, songwriting, accompanying, and improvisation. We also would like to use the lab for arts integration activities in other academic subjects.

With a new digital piano, we could add piano instruction for 16 students a day (2 students X 8 periods)! The piano would not just be used for my classes, but also for students in band and orchestra.

Purchasing musical instruments is not a high priority for families that are still rebuilding their houses from the hurricane, but these instruments provide an enormous educational and creative resource to students. This school highly values the creative arts and your donation will be appreciated greatly!! Our students could be your future entertainers, songwriters, church musicians, or music educators!!
