Literacy is a huge challenge in the classrooms across America today! Classrooms are filled with varying levels of readers and English language learners. My classroom is no exception. I teach 8th grade US history in a classroom of mixed-ability learners. Last year I took a class on using graphic novels to teach history. This year I would love to implement this additional strategy into my classroom to help both my reluctant readers and English-language learners. To implement my teaching goal into my classroom I would like to have a class set of the illustrated version of The Red Badge of Courage. I use historic fiction through to supplement our studies. This book would be used for our Civil War historic fiction book report assignment. This assignment includes detailing examples of fact and opinion, creating an illustrated time line of the events, and completing a detailed character sketch of the main character. Let's work together to foster literacy through the use of graphic novels in my US history classroom!
