Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Little Eyes full of enthusiasm, Little Ears full of expectations, Little Mouths full of kind words, Little minds full of potential, Little hearts full of love...that is what my students bring to school every day. I want to give them something special in return.
I teach in a public school that is above 90% poverty level. My students are English Language Learners, coming from Mexico, Iraq, and Sudan. They are so excited about being in school and having the opportunity to learn. When we had open house, most of the parents brought their children which started the year off great. I have a group of wonderful, hardworking, but poor parents. Many of my parents cannot afford the luxury of taking or buying photographs of their children. Last year, in my ELL class, only 2 parents out of 20 were able to buy class pictures. Our school was unable to publish a yearbook because we did not have enough of a response of parents wishing to purchase it. How sad it is to know that these boys and girls will not have pictures to represent their first year of school. I would like to be able to provide each of my students with multiple pictures of their kindergarten year including field trips, special days like our Dr. Seuss reading celebration, and days with their friends whether they are working or playing. I would like to print pictures to put in a special kindergarten scrapbook for them.
I need a digital camera to make this gift to my students possible. As the song says, "A Picture Paints a Thousand Words" is so true.
I would like for my students to have the help of pictures to keep their memories of kindergarten alive for years to come.
In addition to using it to take the children's pictures, I will use it to take pictures to help teach the students English. Most of them have such limited backgrounds, that it is important to incorporate pictures into learning the English vocabulary.
