My students need a classroom library of a various genres and topics. I have selected a number of books of many genres that will begin the building of an awesome classroom library. Some of them are author sets, some of them are favorites among a third grade class, and some of them are among the Caldecott winners. All of them are high quality literature that will encourage and give incentive to every child to want to read.
One of the most important things I can do as a third grade teacher is provide access to quality literature for my students. Third grade is a pivotal year for applying the reading strategies and skills learned in previous years.
In our high poverty community where we serve 80% of our students free or reduced lunch, and we support an ESL population that is 50% of our community, quality literature is an important tool used everyday in my classroom to teach language acquisition, writing skills, and thinking strategies.
To ensure that students have books in their hands everyday a classroom library is essential. Providing a rich selection of different genres of texts and topics will empower my students to develop their love of reading. Test scores will improve and academic benchmarks will be met. To make this happen in my classroom I have selected many books that are high quality literature that I would like to add to my classroom library. My selections include topics such as friendship, Caldecott winners, and fun characters. I know these selections will be a powerful part of my literacy program and get kids to read.
Your help will make it possible for the students to have books available to them everyday. It will provide support to my literacy program in the classroom. The students will have wonderful examples of rich language, great writing, and deep thinking.
