Literacy pills - if the solution were this easy, I'm sure we'd be mass-producing such pills. I am a second grade teacher in Arizona. I teach at a school that is classified as high poverty, and it is a K-3 school.
The truth of the matter is that the education gap that is so widely talked about is really a literacy gap; and the literacy gap can also be closed by reading followed by reading followed by some more reading. In order to close that gap, we need books. My students have grown up in a low-income neighborhood. They come to school early in the morning, thankful just for the free breakfast provided to them. What they don't know is that they deserve more. They deserve to know and love books the way many children do. They deserve to be able to read through a book with fluency and comprehension skills in their pockets. They deserve the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of literature that they may come to love. Unfortunately, the obstacle is logistical -- a lack of books. Most of my students do not have many books at home, and I feel guilty for not being able to provide them with these opportunities even in my classroom.
My students deserve books that will keep them turning each page. They deserve books that allow them to put to use the literacy skills they are learning. They deserve books that will inspire them to become more fluent so they can reach the ending faster. When it comes down to it, they simply just deserve books. Having these resources will build up their confidence and let them see how much they are capable of.
By funding these books, you will be providing my students with one of the greatest tools they will ever need in life: the ability to read. Often, the prospect of being illiterate is greatly underestimated. For some, it's hard to understand how people can get by without such a basic skill. However, for some of my students, it is a very real possibility. Some of my students have grown up in illiterate households. To know that they are capable of rising past that and achieving such an incredible skill will give them self-confidence in their educational futures. They will have YOU to thank for that.
