This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello. I teach 5th grade reading to about 48 students in Texas. Our school has 90% of its children classified as economically disadvantaged and 98% of these children are Hispanic.

I recently read The Tale of Despereaux and fell in love with this book. I was so excited and I talked to my class this summer about the book and they became interested in reading it. The only problem is we don't have a class set. We need copies of this book to read and evaluate it. Later that week we found out that the movie is going to be released in December 2008, so my kids were even more excited. I really enjoy seeing children excited about literature and, because I am a teacher, it is extremely difficult to see this and not be able to have these materials. Being a teacher I know that children need certain things to motivate them and I do a lot of purchasing on my own for them. This time I know I can't afford this on my own. If you can help my class read and enjoy this wonderful story, I would be so thankful. As I write this asking for help I have tears in my eyes.

In order to do this project, we need 50 copies of The Tale Of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. This will allow each student to have their own copy to take home and do homework assignments and finish classwork. This story is about an unlikely hero who saves a princess by facing his deepest fears. It teaches about love, courage, honor, betrayal, and acceptance. There are so many activities that I have planned for this book that include: characterization, cause and effect, story plot, making predictions, and much much more !!!

By supporting our project you will empower our students to become better readers, independent thinkers, and elaborate writers. One of my goals as a reading teacher is to strengthen the desire to read and turn on the imagination in a child's mind. It is with imagination that we have new inventions, stories and creations. This book is a wonderful tool to make this happen. Please help us.
