This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Dear Donor, I teach second grade to a bilingual special education class. The school I teach in is located in New York and it is a high-need community school.

I believe one of the best ways to teach a child is not just to talk to them about some abstract concepts or describing something to them, but to actually show them what you are talking about. Last year, when I was a newbie, I taught my class science by reading them the materials out of a flip chart and talking to them about it. While some of them were able to understand, the others were a little lost (English is not their native language), and it would have been great to have been able to whip out an example of what I was talking about in the moment.

This year, I would love to have more science materials to have the children learn hands-on. Since I can not bring the real live animals, (scorpions, sea horses and preying mantis, etc...) to the classroom, it would be such a great experience to have these classroom specimens for the children to work with. I would like to have the children use these specimen in science logs that they will have this year, so they can practice their writing and research skills.

Donor, Your generosity would help the children in my classroom, (many of whom have never left the Bronx), to see sea creatures, strange insects, and plant life that they may have never seen before. You will help to increase their curiosity about the world around them and give them what I am sure they would describe as a "cool" experience to share with their schoolmates.
