This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my room have faced many challenges in their lives to get them where they are today. Their most successful challenge is deciding to come to school. Therefore, it is my responsibility to make sure that I give them the opportunity to see how fun and exciting learning really is!

Students attend my school because several poor choices have put them behind in credits needed to graduate.

Thankfully, my school is designed to provide students with every opportunity to gain a diploma and graduate from high school on time. We have a very supportive staff who is willing to do whatever it takes to help each and every student. We offer extra support by tutoring students; we assist them with online courses and even help them sign up for college classes to earn additional credits. When a student makes it to my school, they have the opportunity to start over and make better choices.

My Project

I am requesting 5 copies of the game Stockpile in order to help them understand the Stock Market. My students will be able to participate in a game that reflects the Stock Market, helping them reinforce the concepts they have learned in class. Stockpile is an educational board game that offers players the opportunity to invest in stocks, gain insider secrets, and trade stocks based on the buy low, sell high strategy. At the end of the game, the “investor” with the most money wins! As the game lasts about ten minutes, students take the strategies they have learned in past games and try again for a more successful outcome. The competition level between the students is high, as each student attempts to make smarter and better decisions that are needed to win. Little do they know that this competition results in some major learning!

When you get a student in your class who sees life as something they need to survive, teaching them with lectures is not always the solution.

With this hands-on activity, students are able to connect to the material in a more personal way. They are physically able to see how the concepts I have described in class, play out in a real world scenario. More importantly, this group activity encourages students to reach out to each other to solve problems, which builds up much needed people skills.
