I teach 8th grade science in a rural community in Illinois. My classroom is a mixture of regular and special education students with 47% of them from low income homes. Although many of my students have an interest in science, few have had opportunities to get out of the classroom to explore the many natural areas and resources we have available in our community.
My students enjoy exploring the world of microscopic life in the classroom, but I would like them to be able to do microscopic investigations during lessons in our school garden as well as during field trips to the local refuge.
The donation of cordless microscopes will allow my students to go beyond the walls of the classroom and investigate nature at its source - outside! Rather than just talking about pond water organisms or viewing images in the classroom, my students will be able to take the lead in the learning process as they prepare their own slides and discover the variety of minibeasts that can be found in our local ponds and streams. They will be excited to observe the many living things in each sample and motivated to discover more about each and every one. This field experience will be a building block for later units in the school year when we discuss animal classification and ecological issues.
You donation will ensure that my students will have the opportunity to connect their classroom learning to real-world contexts and future careers.
Through projects such as this, my students will develop an appreciation for all nature has to offer, and I will be able to help them understand what is needed to protect it for future generations.
