“Good morning, I’m Jose with your daily news!" "Let's take a look at how John McCain and Barack Obama are doing in this week's polls." As a 4th grade social studies and math teacher, I am constantly seeking ways to engage my students. For the upcoming school year, I am hoping to launch a broadcast news curriculum that will align with social studies lessons as well as coverage of the 2008 Presidential Election. As an educator and a broadcast journalism major, I strongly believe in teaching our kids about current events to increase their understanding of the world around them. I would like to challenge students to write scripts, work together to shoot video, compose shots to edit stories, and to present their findings through a weekly broadcast. I believe the upcoming election will encourage discussion on current issues that affect my students daily. Since I began teaching two years ago, it has been challenging to access resources and to fund projects. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a direct indicator of poverty. The school itself will struggle even more with budget cuts for the upcoming year, and unfortunately cannot financially support this program. In order to launch this program, the students will need a digital camcorder, a tripod, and mini DV cassette video tapes in order to shoot video for their stories. I am inspired daily by how hard my students work to achieve their goals and to find success in each subject area. Your generous donation will help fifty 4th grade Newsies obtain a more hands-on approach to learning and to help develop them into informed citizens.
