Rolling Up Our Sleeves for Science

My students need activities, such as WormVue Wonders and a Snap Circuits Kit, to engage them in play. My students need science themed kits to increase their hands-on learning resources.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

How can we teach our kids if we don't allow them to get dirty? My classroom is anything but typical. We work on activities that allow us to expand our minds but we need your help to turn our room into an adventure and learn and explore with hands-on activities that fit our different abilities.

My classroom ranges from K-5th grade.

We learn science anyway that we can. Most of my students have some form of a disability that does not allow us to function like other students. When my students come into the science lab, they need help from a teacher or a partner, and they can become very dependent on them. I am trying to have my students with all abilities learn and grow on their own, and at their own pace. My school is a Title 1 school with more than 80% of children receiving free or reduced lunch. We struggle with activities that fit the needs of all students. We struggle finding activities and tools to have been adapted to benefit individual learning and growing. My students participate in sensory labs that teach social skills, science, team building as well as necessary life skills. Our district mission is to provide educational excellence for all students and that is exactly what this project will help us do.

My Project

My students need to learn to take care of others. I thought what a better way to engage my students teaching them to care for others, and care about the environment with a worm farm. This worm farm will be a great way to watch how we care for others, and how it impacts us, our community, and our environment. This also ties into our Common Core Standards! I have found that playing games is a great way to excite students about learning. I have found some great games working with electricity and energy to have them explore ways to create energy, light, and sounds. I feel that these games will also teach students, and promote an insight into the standards as well. These games provide differentiated instruction of energy and electricity, a very difficult concept when not taught hands-on to my students. I have a self contained class that just love dinosaurs. It is so much easier to show them what an archaeologist does when I have an excavation kid for them to do it themselves.

This donation will turn my science class into a laboratory of learning and doing.

I promote learning by doing. Our mission of being able to teach all ability levels can be tough when your resources are very limited. Each and every student in the school comes and visits my lab regardless of their differences, and I want everyone to be able to participate, learn and take some knowledge of the subject being taught each and every time. Most importantly these material will bring science to life.
