Hello, I am a fourth grade teacher in an inner city school. The community in which I teach is a low income area that has many needs.
In our reading program we have a theme called "Survival". This is an exciting unit in which the children have the opportunity to look at many different survival situations. Some survival issues can be "Survive a Trip to the Mall" or "How Would You Survival On Your Own?" Among many of the activities we do in our classroom is a survival journal. Students keep a survival journal with different scenarios, and a reflective page. Also students get to make a message in a bottle, which they love!
This year I want to bring the survival components to a more personal level.
California is a state in which the threat of earthquakes is a reality. Many of the students and their families do not have an emergency plan in place at home.
In schools we practice with regularity how to deal with an emergency during school hours however, at home there are no such plans. This is critical because many families do not have the financial resources to purchase emergency supplies.
The families in my school community make just enough money for food and shelter.
In order to help my students outside the classroom to be safe and to have the opportunity to survive a disaster and make a difference in the world, our families need to have the resources to give them this opportunity. A basic first aid kit is essential. A place were they can have many of the basic first aid materials in one place and where every member of the family knows how to use these supplies is important.
The families will also have an emergency plan in place in addition to the first aid kits.
One of the goals of giving the families of my students a first aid kit is to create family unity. The students will work with the members of their family to make a diagram of their home, emergency escape routes, telephone list of emergency contact numbers, and what the family will do to survive a disaster.
Ever since I was little I have heard about "The Big One", and the fear that I always felt. I want my students to be prepared and maybe reduce the fear that any natural disaster can have in kids. In making an emergency plan, the making of a family as a unit, will empower the children to always be aware and to carry with them the knowledge of what to do in an emergency. When I proposed this idea to my students they were excited and the following day half the class brought in a diagram of their home and how they had already talked with their parents, and this was only an idea, not an assignment! Thank you.
