Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I currently teach Kindergarten and we have been doing a lot of work recently in our school Nature Center. I have many children in my classroom who come to school with little or no experience with books, hands-on materials, or social situations.

I would like to show my students the natural process of composting. I teach a unit about earthworms each year and the children love to look at the worms, play with the worms, and see the worms at work digging tunnels. I would like to have these two composting kits, so that I can demonstrate to my students the job of the worm and let them experience the breakdown of natural materials they provide. The Dirt Maker kits would show my students the tunneling and dirt making process in an easy to see container that would peak their curiosity and get them excited about our unit.

My students would benefit from this experience because they would see the process of composting from beginning to end and then be able to use the compost that they made to feed and nurture the plants we have recently planted. They would also be able to see the earthworms in their natural setting and view them through the clear lid provided in the Dirt Maker kit.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to experience the earth in a hands-on way. They will be able to see that the earthworms they love to watch dig and tunnel have an important job in helping our earth.
