This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
My students are excited to participate in a Senior Day of Community Service rather than sitting in an auditorium doing nothing during standardized testing for the rest of the school. Andrea and Maddie and other members of the Senior Class discussed alternatives to the gym and came up with the idea.
We are a Title I school in FWISD with a high poverty rate among the students. We have an organization at the school district called United Voices for Change that attempts to solve problems our students face.. Each year the club completes a project to better the school or the community. As the students were sitting in the gym performing no activities during standardized testing for the underclass students, Andrea mentioned how wonderful it would be if they could be volunteering instead-thus the creation of Senior Day of Service.
Our school district promotes service learning in its organizational plan and district motto. The students will lead and plan the event which will prepare them for future organizational work. They will each choose a charity where they want to volunteer with other students from our high school. They will also complete follow up fundraising activities if they choose to benefit the specific charity where they volunteered.
In Their Own Words
The goal of Senior Day of Service is to allow 400 Seniors to serve the community and perform volunteer activities rather than waste a day at school while everyone else takes test. We will be able to provide 1200 hours of service in just one morning.
Our UV4C organization and our teacher's leadership class will be leaders in this project. We will advertise, urge students to sign up for the service project, monitor the paperwork, and each of use will be assigned to a project site to manage the group.
This project will allow our Senior Class to perform 1200 of volunteer service which will be a tremendous benefit to all of the charities that we go to-especially those with few volunteers right now. We will not only learn about service-learning but will be able to participate in a hands-on manner. We will learn about charities in our community and ways that we can continue to be involved after we graduate.
