This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The grant will help us serve over 520 students at our school. The students will participate in team sports units such as volleyball, tennis and badminton. During the year they will become increasingly aware of how good physical activity can change their bodies and how much better they feel everyday. Through the use of learning the skills necessary to play these team sports, we will encourage students to increase their level of activity during class while learning skills that can help them compete in their future. The multipurpose game standards are necessary in order to play in the tornado shelter. They can be used for many different team sports. They will also be used by the whole school for field days and indoor recess. Due to the versatility of the game standards, they will become an important, but expensive piece of equipment for physical education.
This project provides students with life-applicable learning. The US Department of Health & Human Services reported that ½ of all young people do not get enough exercise on a regular basis. This project is also innovative because our students will learn skills that will help them participate in Jr. High and High School. Many will become athletes using these skills and this will help them find scholarships for college. This will provide the students skills that they will use and build upon throughout their lifetime.
The students will:
• Increase awareness about what is happening with their bodies during physical activity
• Improve their health and well-being by becoming moderately active on a regular basis
• Be involved in Problem Solving Enhancement - Problems on the court begin to be viewed as exciting puzzles rather than threatening sources of future failure.
• Understand Renewal of Energies - A good heated battle distracts you from the real problems in life, renews your batteries, and increases your level of fitness.
• Develop Self-Confidence - Handling adversity on the court may help boost confidence in dealing with real life problems.
This project will be evaluated throughout the year as teaching of the standards are presented and assessed. Each student will also set a personal skills goal during the team sports units. The true evaluation will be the percentage of students that will meet or beat their personal skills goal.
The entire student body of approximately 520 students will be affected by this project. The materials will be available to Physical Education classes. The materials will also be available to staff and volunteers for field days. There will be 1 teacher and 1 paraprofessional various staff and volunteers involved in the project. The idea can be used for almost any grade level. Activities can be chosen according to the age of the students. The multipurpose game standards are very versatile to use. It would be great to work with other teachers across the district or even the state to share information about activities that have been developed using the multipurpose game standards. We must all do our part to help kids learn how to stay active.
