"I teach 1st grade at a low-income school in the Northwest. We are a Title 1 school, with more than 75% of students below the poverty line. My students have no books at home and a lack of access to the public library. Therefore, the literacy exposure at school has become very important. We are constantly trying to expand the students’ experiences through reading. Our first graders are exploring science through learning about insects at a young age. Without good subject-related books containing true facts and important information, it is very challenging for me to help my students articulate what they see in nature. Just recently, as I tried to explain to my students about butterflies, I felt saddened that I only have two books on the subject.

I am asking for a selection of mostly non-fiction books related to the science units we learn in first grade. Ideally I could use one book per week for my students to independently read and respond to for a three month unit. I also plan to read aloud one science book a day.

My students need a classroom set of good primarily non-fiction books on insects. Because the titles are varied, it is more effective in keeping little first graders’ interest.

Start young, start early, give them a chance and let them shine. How exciting to watch our 6-year-olds grow into a beautiful butterfly, the future scientists!

My students need at least 1 copy of 44 book titles, from "Born to Be a Butterfly" to "Metamorphosis". We need 4 copies of some titles for small group reading purposes.

Dear Cash4Books.net and rwleftwi@gmail.com,
I am elated to receive such a wonderful gesture of kindness and generosity. My students will now have quality non-fiction and science books. I bet they will jump for joy when they see the brand-new books you bought for the class. On behalf of the first graders and our learning community, I sincerely thank you.

On Oct 15, 2008, Mrs. B. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
