Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

PS 188X is a special education school with grades Pre-K to 8th grade. The students we teach all have special needs. We teach students with multiple handicaps, emotional disabilities, and student with mental retardation. Most of the students in our school are diagnosed with autism. Over 75% of the students who attend our school live in low income areas so the students are provided free breakfast and lunch.

Our number one goal is to teach our student with autism how to be as independent as possible. Many of the classes spend half their time learning academics and the other half of their time learning basic life skills. Our students are lucky enough to have the opportunity to learn to cook and prepare foods. Many of our students now go home and help their parents prepare dinner. Others are able to make themselves a meal all on their own.

Our school is in desperate need of a new refrigerator. The one we currently have is very old and no longer keeps the food cold. We often throw many dairy products, snacks, and other food items away because they are spoiling. Not only is this a waste of food and money it prevents our students from being able to cook and prepare different foods.

A new refrigerator would be so helpful for our school and most importantly for our students. A child with a disability can thrive and live an independent life. Allowing our students to overcome their disability and not rely on the help of others at all times is the best gift we can give them. Watching my students grow and learn to care for themselves is the most rewarding experience. Children with special needs deserve a chance to become active adults in their everyday lives.
