This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of my biggest challenges is to instill a love of reading in my students. Every morning we begin our day with quiet reading where students can choose classroom library books that are of high interest to them. This also gives them the opportunity to read books they may not have access to at home.

My students are FANTASTIC!

We are a small urban school located downtown so there is not a lot of green space. Our school is a Title 1, high poverty school. 10% of our student population is homeless. We also have a very high population of English Language Learners. However, the one thing they all have in common is their motivation to learn.

My Project

Students spend more time in the classroom during the week than they do at home. During this time I do my best to help instill a love of learning and keep them happy. I try to do this by providing an atmosphere that makes them feel motivated and engaged. One of the ways I try to provide them with a happy environment is to use colors and graphics that are bold and bright. These book bins will help add to the color in my classroom and provide a way to make my library more appealing. I believe that by providing a classroom library that looks more inviting, students will be more likely to want to visit the library, choose books and read MORE!

Students need to READ, READ, and then READ some more!

Reading is one of the most important skills a student must master in order to succeed in school and in life. Almost everything we do in life requires reading. I believe that by providing my students with an environment that is appealing to them, they will have more interest in reading. Getting students to be a motivated reader starts with the classroom environment and the book bins are the 1st step towards instilling their motivation!
