I teach science and mathematics to a group of fifth grade students with multiple levels of intelligence, in an extremely high-need community.
Although I teach in a rural area of the county many of my students lack the basic skills to survive well without the bare conveniences that we consider necessary. Our school operates on the bare minimum and sometimes that is zero. Class book sets for thematic units in our school are very few.
I would like to integrate science with the Newbury award winning novel "Hatchet". For this thematic unit 34 paperback books, 1 audio-book, and a teaching manual are needed. My students would greatly benefit from the experience of reading this book, because it is well-written, atypical, and address many of the issues that our kids face in today's society. Incorporating activities that relate to the story ideas: ecosystems, plant, and animal survival will have more meaning to my students when coupled with scientific concepts.
You can make it possible for my students to have a unique learning experience that otherwise they would not be allowed.
