Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever think about all the different subjects in school and try to figure out how they were connected? This year my students are being introduced to the links between science, technology, engineering, art and technology.
My students are energetic, hardworking, fun loving students like most middle school student are.
They come from many different backgrounds and most qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many students do not have technology other than their parents smartphones at home so the only place they are able to experience it is in the classroom. A large percentage of my students this year are English Language Learners.
My Project
My students need origami paper and Spirographs to incorporate the art into our STEAM class. My students will use these art supplies to see how science and math relate to art. The origami paper will be used to create items that will be used in a science experiment. The science experiment will tie in math and English skills as well as art and ancient paper folding techniques.
The Spirographs will be used to teach my students about the color wheel as well as warm and cool colors. We will then tie in math with the different patterns and shapes. If time allows we will then look at some computer programs that make similar designs and connect that to the algorithms that they use to make the programs function.
My students are interested in how the different parts of STEAM are integrated and how they tie into the world we are living in.
With these supplies we will be able to begin to see some of the connections and create some art masterpiece in the process. Art is such an important part of a students learning that has been cut out as the money in education has decreased. With these supplies we will be able to bring a small part back into the classroom.
