Capturing the Interest of Struggling Readers

My Students

Many of my students are very low level readers and often have very low confidence when it comes to reading a novel. In order to grasp their attention and imaginations, I believe high interest books would do the trick.

My students are selected for my Title 1 Reading class based on their reading level.

The students that are placed into my classroom are below basic readers. Many of my students have not succeeded in their academics mostly because of lack of reading skills and comprehension.

My Project

We would read The Maze Runner series throughout the year in my reading classroom. Last year, I purchased two copies of The Maze Runner to read with my students. I have never witnessed students become as excited as some of them did while reading that novel. They couldn't wait to come in to get started reading to see what happened next. To keep that energy going, especially since the next movie is getting ready to come out, I want to be able to introduce my students to the whole series, and have a set for each student.

This will allow me to hook my students on reading.

Reading this series could also provide a platform for students to branch out and try another series. The more exposure to reading these students have, the more improvement they will see in not just their reading levels but also confidence in other classrooms.
