By the end of the school year, I want my students to see how reading and writing is important in science and other content areas, not just in English class. I want my students to learn about and explore science both inside and outside of the classroom to see the connections to the world around them.
My school is in its second year and still growing and developing with a focus on what is best for all students.
Students in our school are extremely diverse, coming from many different backgrounds and experiences. Together, they are learning to be more connected with the world around them.
My Project
With the access to nonfiction books and magazines, students will read and extend their learning beyond the class lessons. They will be able to make connections from the texts to lessons from class which will provide opportunity to share new information with the class.
Students will find information within the text and work on their summarizing skills.
They will also use the texts to improve their research skills by searching for specific information and citing their sources.
Literacy across the curriculum is extremely important for students.
Many don't see the connections between literacy skills and content beyond English. By having access to nonfiction texts in a science classroom, students will not only extend their learning of the content, but will continue to practice and improve important literacy skills that will help them throughout their entire life.
