Literacy Across the Preschool Classroom

My students need the couch, carpet, variety of books, and easel in our Pre-K classroom to develop strong literacy components across our curriculum.

My Students

When you walk into our classroom you will see a comfortable environment that is purposefully set up to be rich in literacy in natural ways while developing all of the students skills in speaking, listening, comprehension, reading and writing in a variety of ways including print and digital media.

Our Preschool is a Universal program that serves 3 year old special needs and 4 year old children preparing for Kindergarten.

Our population is varied in economic status and cultural diversity although a majority of our attendance area is low income. Due to the diverse make up of our classroom, we serve children who are non verbal, have limited English, or have had minimal exposure to books and language. Our class is in a unique situation as we are housed in a local high school. This unique situation allows our young students to develop relationships with older high school students interested in pursuing careers in the early childhood field. These relationships between students allows for more individualized work and concentration on literacy skills that would not otherwise happen in a regular preschool setting.

My Project

A key to literacy development during the preschool years is the classroom library. The couch, carpet and easel will promote my student's access and time with books. The additional books and story sets will encourage regular visits to the area to help the children develop a habit of engaging in a variety of literacy experiences including reading, acting out, listening and engaging in meaningful conversation. This habit will help develop a desire for life long learning. In this comfortable setting, they will be able to pretend to read, use visual cues to remember words of their favorite stories and develop knowledge about print concepts that can be used in later years. They will develop skills in phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, and vocabulary development.

This project will make a difference by allowing positive, nurturing relationships with peers, older students and adults while engaging in appropriate activities and conversations with individual and groups of children while modeling proper reading and writing behavior and foster the student's interest in and enjoyment of reading.

It will also allow for natural opportunities to engage in play that incorporates literacy experiences such as read aloud and story retelling for ALL my students.
