My students need five iPad Mini tablets and protectors to access learning apps and online opportunities which provide simulated real-life learning situations.
I am so fortunate to teach an amazing group of special learners. Everyday I go home with another wonderful memory to add to my years of teaching. My classroom is a positive environment where students feel valued and respected. Their smiles make my day.
Each of the students I have the privilege of teaching are working towards an Access Points diploma within the self-contained academic setting.
16 students have been identified as ASD, 15 have been identified as Mild ID, two have been identified as Moderate ID, one has been identified as Visually Impaired, and one has been identified as Emotionally Disturbed. Some of my students have physical disabilities as well, but in my classroom it is as if we are one big family and we cherish our differences. Each of them have difficulty with life skills such as working with money, telling time, measuring, reading comprehension, written language skills, and retaining learned information. Some of my students receive speech and language services. They are kind, generous, care for each other fiercely, and look to me as a role model...which I take very seriously. Our high school is home to 2800+ students just outside of Orlando. Although the school is highly regarded, funding is sadly limited.
My Project
In the past year I have been introduced to educational programs that can be accessed through smart phones and tablets to interact with the lesson in real time. While I have been able to do some of my interactive lessons using laptops with the students, they do not have the capability to be completely interactive. Additionally laptops are not available to my students on a regular basis as the school has need for them, particularly during state assessments (which occur several times throughout the year). If I were to have five iPads for the classroom, I would be able to integrate the technology in a meaningful and immediate manner. They would allow my students to interact with the Mimeo program that works with my interactive whiteboard through an app on the iPad. Many of my students do not have the means to own a personal Smart Phone or tablet, therefore access to the iPad will give them this experience within the school setting.
The iPads will improve my classroom by providing learning opportunities that correlate with Individualized Education Plan goals and objectives, particularly with real-life simulations.
