My Students

"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." I need to get the tools of learning into the hands of my students.

My students are wards of the state.

They come from various troubled backgrounds. Some have had little or no formal schooling. They need to learn how to learn. Each class has students of various ages and grade levels. It is a struggle to keep them all engaged and working at an appropriate skill level.

My Project

The card stock we are requesting will be used to have the students build math manipulatives and paper engineering projects. Without realizing it, they will be learning to follow directions, use tools appropriately, and create something they can be proud of. Some examples of things we build are stellated dodecahedrons, and gear mechanisms.

Building something with their own hands will give my students a sense of ownership for their learning.

They appreciate the end product much more than if you just hand them a manipulative to work with. This will make the learning last.
