Comfy, Cozy, Engaged, Safe, Focused. Second graders need a place to sit and learn together that will be all of these things. A rug for our classroom will provide students from a high need area not only a place to learn but to be risk takers, leaders, and to create a positive classroom environment.
I am new to second grade this year, coming from Special Education, and am striving to create an environment that supports student’s needs, fosters learning, and allows for students to meet as a community of peers to show kindness and support for each other’s goals.
I am very lucky to be part of a school that has students who not only want to be their best, but want to help others to reach their best too. I feel that my transition into the classroom will be a smooth one, and that my new students will know that they are cared for, loved, and that they always have an advocate in their corner. I am hoping to help my students see that their character is important, that they can have fun and enjoy their time in my class, and that they are strong learners. Second graders may still be young, but they are able to do great things, and I hope I will be able to inspire my students to do so.
My students need a carpet. This carpet will be used for gathering together, for our morning meeting and discussions. It will also be use for whole group lessons, interactive lessons with manipulatives, reading buddies, visitors, read aloud time, portable centers, and other opportunities for the students to take place in learning in a comfortable area. The classroom rug is the central meeting place and where students spend a significant part of their day. Right now, my classroom has a cold hard floor with no rug. I am hoping to provide a rug that will not only be a comfortable place to learn, but that will provide my students with their own personal space during group learning. Students learn best when they are in a safe, welcoming, cheerful, and comfortable space that welcomes risk taking. I feel that I have created this within the space I have, but that a rug would complete our room.
Donations to this project would improve my classroom significantly by providing a main focal point, a meeting place, and safe and comfortable place to learn.
My students will be extremely grateful to have a place that they can call their own to learn that is less restrictive than just their desks.
