My students need some new outdoor play equipment to help with the expansion of our 4YK program and its playground. We would like to add a climber and a tunnel.
Our Four-Year Old Kindergarten program is a fun, engaging, and educational place for students to begin their years of school. We would like to encourage our students to be healthy and active while learning and practicing the social skills necessary for continued success in school and life.
At our school, we are looking to improve our early childhood playground for the Four-Year Old Kindergarten and Head Start children.
We are a small school district with limited resources that is striving to provide an excellent learning environment in a district with a high percentage of low income families. Because of the number of low income families in our district as well as the current trends in technology use and more time indoors for young children, we want to make sure our children have plenty of opportunities to be active outdoors. We have expanded our 4YK program from 4 1/2 days per week to 4 full days per week. We also added a partnership with Head Start to better serve the needs of the children in our area. Our playground, that typically handles 20-30 children, will need to handle 40-50 children next school year. Our goal is to help these youngest learners get off to a great start in school with fun, active and educational activities that can take place outdoors.
My Project
We were fortunate to receive a local community grant that is allowing us to enlarge our playground. As a result of that playground expansion, we would like to purchase some additional climbing and crawling structures for the children to use. Young children are still developing a wide variety of large muscle and social skills. Playgrounds are a fantastic place to practice these essential skills, which include sharing, turn taking, problem solving, imaginative play, balancing, catching, throwing, running and climbing. We like to consider our outdoor space an extension of our classroom and feel that the children will benefit greatly from the expansion of our current playground.
