Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our country is too focused on test scores and not on innovation. I want to use S.T.E.M. standards and my computer lab to ignite my student's passion for technology and learning. I want to use that passion to teach them critical thinking skills, problem solving, and computer programming.

My school is in the heart of Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

The population is mostly Caribbean American. People are hard working and want the best for their kids. My students are from K to 5th grade. The students are smart, funny and very passionate about technology.

My Project

This past winter was our school's first ever participation in the Lego League competition. My students enjoyed the day very much and so did the parents. It was a great way to show that computer programming can be fun for anyone. Parents enjoyed it so much that they asked how I can expand the program. So I thought about it and all I really need is a few robot kits to make this program school wide.

Your donations will allow me to teach more rigorous topics in my computer class.

Teaching my students how to program a robot is the same as teaching them the basics of computer programming. With these robot kits I can prepare my students for futures in jobs that will allow them to explore their creativity while using their skills. It's time we stop focusing on state test scores and focus on the idea that creativity and learning are one in the same.
