Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are full of heart and hope. They are ethnically diverse, inner-city students from across Los Angeles. 70% are bussed to my school and travel far to get a quality education. I want to inspire them with the tools to live their best life and have every opportunity available to them.
As a 12th year English teacher, I've worked to increase opportunities for students to succeed.
I constantly seek professional development experiences to refine my craft. I have completed my National Boards Certification and have participated in global programs and teacher leadership fellowships. I am particularly interested in how to help students build tools and resources to navigate the challenges they face in life. I want to learn how to help students develop greater resiliency and grit so that they can truly thrive.
My Project
I want to complete Martha Beck's Life Coach training so that I can build strategies to help students better navigate life. My students face many obstacles in their home, school and community that often prevent them from being able to be fully present in the classroom. Their ability to navigate these challenges often is the determining factor that either enables students to thrive, or leads to their disconnecting from school. In order to address this need, I have taught after school classes in Healthy Living, where we've examined the role of stress outlets in life. I've also embedded themes of decision making and overcoming obstacles in my classroom curriculum. At this point, I feel like I need comprehensive training to meet student needs of how to navigate life so that they can fully access the content in schools and thrive in all they do.
Though life coaching is an unofficial role of educators, it isn't one that is explicitly taught to us.
I want to build comprehensive, systemic tools to help students navigate life through life coaching training. I know that this will make a tremendous impact in my ability to help students thrive in the classroom and in life. Thank you for your consideration and support!
