Improving Reading One Book at a Time.

My students need multiple copies of lower reading level chapter books to help improve their reading comprehension.

My Students

My classroom is for students who have intellectual disabilities. They range in functional level from Mild to Severe.

First off, my students are pretty amazing!

My kids love to learn and I look forward to making them as independent as possible in the tasks we review over daily. My kids love to please their teachers and do what is required with one on one assistance. All of my students, from the highest to lowest functioning, love reading time. I am able to modify the curriculum in order to meet their academic needs. Our school is always supportive and inclusive to the needs of all of our students. But, just as other school systems I am reaching out to others for help.

My Project

With more reading material, my students will be able to better access chapter books on their reading level. Chapter books are seen as a challenge for my students, and they always look forward to the challenge. As 9th graders, my students like to be involved in what the general education students are participating in with their peers, but my students require lower grade level materials. I have had general education students work with my students ( which has always been successful and rewarding for all students involved). During and after the readings, all students will be working on reading/listening comprehension skills, improving oral reading fluency and improving work recognition. At the end of our readings, my students like to do a project to show about the book they read. These projects can be anything from graphic organizers to pictures depending on the student.

With donations, my classroom will benefit from a variety of readings.

Due to the grade level of the materials being selected, they are not available in our library. Having these chapter books readily available in the classroom setting, will allow my students the opportunity to be able to read selected books at any time (which is not the current situation). Giving my students more available interesting and academically appropriate readings will allow them to feel successful as readers in my classroom.
