Students who enroll in AP Literature have a summer assignment. Last year (my first teaching this course), I selected the novel. While in the end, the students did enjoy it, I believe if I would have taken suggestions, the buy-in would have been sooner.
This group of students are rising 12th graders.
I have taught most of them throughout their entire high school English courses. Most of them had never picked up a book and really read it let alone have critical questions centered around the literature. Oh what a difference a few years can make! These students will be in Advanced Placement Literature and Composition next school year. This project was designed by some of the students who selected what they want to read during the summer for our class.
This project was designed by some of the students who selected what they want to read during the summer for our class. Students will be required to read chapters, prepare questions about the literature, and participate in group discussions via social network sites such as Today's Meet. The Glass Castle books will also be used to discuss writing techniques the author, Jeannette Walls, used and students will give their opinions on the effectiveness of those techniques.
By contributing to this project, the students will not have to pay for the books.
I am anticipating two large classes of AP Lit next year. While the project does not cover all students, it will decrease the amount of money my students/school will have to pay for the remaining books.
