"Does the prosecution have a closing statement?"
"Yes your Honor, may it please the court?"
With those words the competition every year of the public high school mock trial awaits the verdict of the judges to see if their team will advance to the next round.
I have been coaching students for eighteen years in mock trial.
Most students are hard working and have dreams of stepping into the courtroom themselves. Mock Trial is a stepping stone to encourage young people to participate and get involved in the law. My students come from all racial and ethnic backgrounds. For some, the dream of law school is a first in their family.
My Project
These resources will make such a difference to my law students. These resources will help them learn more about the legal field of study, the vocabulary they need to know and the court room process. The flash cards will introduce legal terms, the closing arguments book will help them understand how to word their closing statements so they can be more persuasive, professional and successful in mock trial.
So many of these resources revolve around crafting the winning argument and making a case that sells to the jury. These books and resources will help students become more competitive in the mock trial setting and help the students in our legal studies program understand the law in a meaningful way-through the creation of a student only mock trial.
There are hundreds of students in our legal studies program, truly a gift like this will inspire and support or students who dream of having a career in the field of law or who want to compete in the high school mock trial case that is presented every spring.
Your gift towards this project can help build careers and dreams. Thank you.
