Teaching science can be difficult when you are not provided with the right tools to engage your students. I can remember doing many experiments and having lots of fun in science class. I was engaged but as a teacher without resources I find it hard to have my students involved in their learning.
My students are in a low poverty are in Michigan.
They love to get up and move. I teach deaf and hard of hearing students so they rely a lot on visual learning tools to help them learn. They love to learn but they love it more when they have fun while doing it.
My Project
When it comes to science my students do not get excited about it. Why is this you ask? I have only been provided with out dated text books, they teach great things but there are no resources to go with the lessons. When I look at their faces when I am teaching I get sad with them. Some things I have bought in to teach with the lesson and it made a huge difference. I was more excited and they were listening to everything I said and even passed the quiz at the end of the lesson! I chose science activities with lots of color to get their attention visually and that connects with the books I have. I picked science materials that have experiments with them so they can they can really get the feel of why we learn the things we do and some materials have reading comprehension for a cross curricular lesson added into it. I included a visual timer so they can see how much time they have left and be totally involved in their experiment.
The donations would help us improve our informal science grades and the state wide test as well.
It will get my students up and out of their seats and really participating in their learning. My goal is for their hearing impairment not to be a set back to their future and I want them to be exposed to every thing they can while they are with me.
