"In inner-city, low-income communities of color, there's such a high correlation in terms of educational quality and success." - Bill Gates.
My students depend on me to be an advocate for them.
All of my six and seven year old students have stories beyond what any of them should endure. Homelessness, gun violence, gang violence, lack of food, are all things they deal with on a daily basis. When my students enter our classroom they know they are in a safe place. 100% of my students qualify for free lunch. Despite the adversity they face, they are working hard to become better citizens. In our classroom we have a small stuffed "pet" turtle named Feelings. Feelings helps my class talk about their feelings and share their thoughts in a constructive way. Feelings helps build mutual respect and teaches my students to accept their differences in a positive way.
My classroom needs 3 kindle fires and protective cases. We will use them during math and literacy centers. I've researched many apps for the Kindle Fire. I am excited for my students to practice sight words, vocabulary, reading fluency, and mathematicians using different apps and e-books. The various apps and e-books will allow my students to practice certain skills at their own ability level. In addition to the kindle fires, my students will be recording what they do on the Fire during their center time. For instance, if a student reads or listens to an e-book, they will complete a summary of the story or write about their favorite part. For my students to document what they do each day, I will need ink and paper.
Having technology is absolutely necessary for my students to grow into life-long learners ready to impact the ever changing world around them.
My students deserve a high quality education. Your support would mean the world to my students. I can already see their eyes light up as we open our package from Donors Choose. Thank you for giving my students the hope for a brighter future!
