My 22 fifth graders are full of curiosity. While they live in an area of extreme poverty, they never let their lack of finances hold them back. However, lack of funds means limited life experiences. Many of our students have never ventured more than a few blocks from their houses in their entire lives.
The children in my class have had very little exposure to science and are nervous about experimenting. They are unaware of the world of science surrounding them everyday. They need to engage with science in a hands-on way.
Because of this, I am asking you to help me to bring the world (of rocks) to them. The materials requested will allow every one of my students to touch, evaluate, and experiment with rock classification. These real specimens will be infinitely more powerful a teaching tool than reading about rocks in a textbook. I foresee the students becoming excited about rocks and science.
