The library is the most beloved place in the school. I want my students to have a well-stocked Maker Space in the library where they can dream, collaborate, think critically, create, share, and discover their passions. "I am not a teacher, but an awakener." by Robert Frost
My school has awesome students in grades 10-12 filling our learning spaces.
Our students are the nicest young people you will ever meet. We have a diverse population. Our city is a refugee center and families come from all over the world to provide a safe place to raise their families. Fifty percent of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Our students are motivated to learn and achieve in their studies so they can have a good life. We have many eager learners who prefer hands-on activities to learn and experiment with science and art concepts. Our teachers are focused on all aspects of teenage development. They not only teach our students their content, but help students connect their learning to the real world which will help them be more successful in life. The students feel fortunate to attend a high school that has a family-like atmosphere. Students outside of our service area come to our school because of its "welcoming and caring" reputation.
My Project
I am stocking a Maker Space in the library so students can extend their classroom learning as well as explore leisure activities. The materials and equipment that I am requesting will help me achieve this goal. The Maker Space is a place where students can learn how to do many different things such as repairing a bicycle, building and using a 3D printer, painting, drawing, knitting a scarf, building a cardboard chair, sewing a tote, hemming a pair of pants, making greeting cards, building a remote airplane or a robot, or making an altered book. Students will learn from their peers as well as their teachers and community experts in the Maker Space. I know that our students will enthusiastically embrace all the opportunities that a well-stocked Maker Space has to offer! If they can imagine it, they can make it! They will feel a deep sense of accomplishment for their efforts. The students will be empowered to make and/or do some real cool stuff and expand their knowledge and skills base.
The donations will help provide a significant amount of materials and equipment for the Library Maker Space so our students can master STEAM skills as well as the 4 C's--creativity, critical thinking, and communication.
The students will be college and career ready and be enabled to be active participants in today's global community. They will discover their passions and/or some valuable hobbies to enjoy during their lives which is so important for their well-being.
