Children need to be heard and understood not just seen as in the old adage 'children should be seen but not heard'. I am a speech therapist who works with children from preschool age to fifth grade.
Children do not realize how they sound when they make articulation or grammar errors - in their minds they are correct. They think that we are hearing what they mean to say in their minds. Unfortunately, when they have disabilities - what comes out is either incorrect or unintelligible.
The card reader that I am requesting will work with all ages. The cards can have pictures, photographs, sentences, or words on them. The children say what is on or expected from the card and it is recorded. Then the card can immediately be replayed so the child can hear their response in order to make the correction. I can also say the model the word and have them imitate it. We can listen as a group and the child can determine if they were correct. In group situations everyone can listen and practice.
This is better than a small cassette recorder because it is an 8 second recording that the child can put back in the machine and listen to it immediately. The cards can be rerecorded over many times. This is a device that is practical for all ages and communication disorders. The students can name pictures, or read (if they have that ability), or answer the questions that are on the card. Children love the immediate feedback and are usually in awe of their own voices. Often, they have to say whatever they want in order to believe it is really their own voice. This device can make a difference for all of my students. It can be used on a daily basis. As my heading said - they can see something (on the card) say it (no microphone needed) and hear it - immediately!!!
