Ms. Hall from Capitol Heights MD is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 31 copies of novels that are both engaging and challenging. The books selected; "Alice in Wonderland" and "Great Expectations" are two classics.

Last year was just the beginning! My students (I looped with them) got their feet wet in the literary canon with "Fahrenheit 451" and "To Kill A Mockingbird". Now that I have these 10th &11th graders thinking about college and AP courses next year, I need to continue to build their literary canons.
This project is designed for my sophomores & juniors.
To an outsider, they are fast-talking knuckleheads who are notorious for giving many in our school a tough time. However, inside my classroom they transform into scholars. They want to learn and that has not always been the case. For my juniors, many will apply for next year's AP Literature class. Traditionally, there has not been many take the class. My goal is to have two solid classes of AP Lit.
The two books "Alice in Wonderland" and "Great Expectations". Alice in Wonderland is designed for my sophomores and Great Expectations for my juniors. For the 10th graders, I plan to focus on quotes in the novel and have them see how the themes apply to their lives and in other novels. My juniors, will use the book as a springboard to discussions about society, wealth, and life as an adult (procuring a job, mentors, etc).
Common Core is forcing educators to better prepare students for life after high school.
I am loving this task! The quality of novels my students are reading and the expectation they have of me to deliver is exciting! I have witnessed this over the past two years using donorschoose and getting projects funded. It is my hope to continue bring rich novels to the classroom which will improve the lessons and produce life-long readers!
