This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach World History to a mixture of freshmen through seniors. My school is a vocational magnet school in the public school system.
There is currently no funding available for a class set of Holocaust novels for my classroom. Literature is invaluable to history. Firsthand accounts that make students think is invaluable to their history lessons.
This novel, "The Sunflower: on the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness", is not what many consider the 'typical' holocaust novel. It does not focus on the grizzly details of atrocities committed. Instead, it focuses on one Jewish man's moral dilemma when he is asked to forgive a dying Nazi for his war crimes against all Jews. From this point students must reason out what forgiveness is, who can give or receive it and if it is even possible.
When past students have read this book it always opens up hours of discussion (even with my non-readers). I've seen students do amazing higher-level thinking and discussion all due to this novel. Once I was able to borrow a class set from an outside source, but that option is not available most semesters. So it's a rare occasion that I am able to teach this novel. I truly believe this Holocaust novel has a huge impact on students and their learning (partly due to its different approach) and every attempt to teach it should be made.
So I need a class set of the novel "The Sunflower: on the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness". Students love this book. It raises moral questions that there are no real answers to, so students are forced to ponder and question and discuss. The learning becomes not only about the historical or moral issue, but about being able to have a rational discussion where opinions differ (thus teaching life skills as well).
Your generous gift would allow my students to experience this phenomenal piece of literature and expand their horizons. You can have a part in igniting my students’ desire to learn more.
