My Students

My students are excited about labs, especially when they can use up-to-date technology and techniques to gather data and analyze samples.

Many chemistry students are hoping to go on to universities and pursue a career in a field that requires a strong science foundation.

They are most interested when they are using up-to-date technology and techniques to conduct their investigations, and when the investigations are related to substances they encounter in daily life. The technology students use in the high school classroom can better prepare them for success as they move on to post-secondary education. For example, students in my advanced chemistry class have determined the mass of dye added to commercial drinks and have determined the % of copper in a sample of brass to within less than 1% error.

My Project

The SpectroVis+ is an incredibly useful tool that allows students to see the full absorption spectrum of chemical species, and gain a better understanding of the scientific principles while they conduct their analyses. My students used a Vernier SpectroVis+ for both of the analyses mentioned above. However, we only have two of these units so some students end up spending class time waiting for access to the instruments and then have to come in during their lunch or stay after school just to gather their data.

If we have three more SpectroVis+ units, students will be able to better utilize their class time and complete a greater number of advanced investigations which will help prepare them for success as they go on to college.
