Remember learning all those concepts in school? Of course you probably don't remember! However, I bet that you remember the "events" that touched you. For my students, learning centers on Friday afternoons are those "events."
Every Friday, my students, in groups of 2 or 3, rotate through 10 different centers. These centers reinforce what we have been learning throughout the week. Currently, it is a struggle to make centers that are both educational and engaging.
With these new centers, learning will be reinforced by games and other fun activities. The three different centers I am requesting are Science, Social Studies, and Reading & Writing.
The Science centers are packed with fun science activities kids can complete on their own! Each center includes 13 different activities, plus all the materials for each one—including a nonfiction book, vocabulary cards, hands-on manipulatives and more. Students just grab a write & wipe activity card, then follow the simple instructions to investigate concepts at their own pace!
The Social Studies centers feature books, hands-on manipulatives and fun, step-by-step activities that put social studies concepts at students’ fingertips! Each center includes 13 different write & wipe activity cards, plus a nonfiction book, handy guide cards and more.
The Reading & Writing centers help students master word families, develop grammar skills, boost comprehension and more—with skill-building centers that let them work at their own pace! Each center comes with 4 sets of hands-on materials, plus a double-sided chart with illustrated instructions that are super-easy to follow.
I teach second grade at Williams Elementary which has a population of approx 650 students. Our school is nestled in a small community. It used to be largely populated by family farms; however, that has changed. Industry is the main way of life for most of our families. Because of industries leaving our area, we have a 40% free lunch population. This means that 40% of our students qualify for free lunch!
Asking our families to help with the cost of a project like this just doesn't seem fair. Some of my families have trouble putting food on the table, how could I possibly ask them to help out monetarily?
